My work has to do with a universal plea for the preservation of the species, the continuation of human cultures and the responsibility for each individual to safeguard and transmit values, beauty and resources to subsequent generations. The universality of the message is conveyed by my use of ancient cultural icons, borrowed from various spiritual traditions which have touched my life. These images may take the form of saints, gods, angels, sages, virgins, etc. Some may be easily identifiable within a religious context. Others are less specific and open to interpretation. These beings are then intermingled with depictions of the flora and fauna which so richly abound around my studio. The spiritual icon and the fruits of the earth are then conjoined by layers of spontaneous writing which usually take the form of prayers, and appears as fragments and texture upon the surface of the canvas. The anthropomorphic image often tends to meld into the writing or the landscape, creating an ethereal feel of the intangible and of the passage of time. In my paintings, I attempt to convey the universality of human mythos and its interconnectedness with cultural continuum, social consciousness, and the inherent responsibility for good stewardship of the earth. As the peoples of the world come ever closer through technological advance, it is my calling as an artist to remind others of our commonality and interdependence. By using imagery that evokes many cultural traditions, I hope to bring home to all that no matter what our religious, ethnic, or socioeconomic background, the survival of humanity, culture and the environment lies in our hands. Therefore, I draw upon the concept of the sacred to lend gravity and personal relevance to the message which I hope will touch the viewer. I believe that myth, art and culture emanate from the forms and processes of the natural world. My work is a prayer that, by reminding mankind of its rich and ancient cultural archetypes, social consciousness will reconnect with the endangered environment, and thus effect change in our practices, laws and institutions that will ensure a healthy future for our descendants. |
