I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1952. During my formative years I enjoyed the benefits of the rich cultural life which that cosmopolitan city has to offer. As a child living through the Cuban revolution, I became keenly aware of the importance of human dignity in effecting social and political reform. I was quite interested in the plastic and performing arts. One of my earliest attempts at graphics was published in Cuba’s “Bohemia” magazine. It is a six year old child’s impression of the Revolution. My family emigrated to New Orleans in 1961. There I continued my development in the arts and cultural studies. I traveled widely throughout the world, gaining an intimate knowledge of people from all walks of life. My college work concentrated in fine arts and theater arts. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Communications. Subsequent years were spent doing scenic and costume design for stage, film and television, as well as designing floats for the New Orleans Mardi Gras parades. My early paintings on canvas dealt mainly with Creole, Spanish and Cuban folklore, along the line of genre paintings. Some of these paintings were exhibited in 2003 at the River Oaks Art Center in Alexandria, Louisiana. The group show entitled “Hispanic Visions” was held in conjunction with the important "Heart of Spain" exhibit commemorating the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial. I have lived much of my adult life in California, where I have a studio in the coastal redwood forest of Sonoma County. It is here, within the buffer of the forest; that I have tapped into the powerful richness of nature, and the reverie of imagery that it evokes in me. From this isolated vantage point, I feel more in touch with the spirit of the world and its people. Thus I can more readily convey my love for humanity onto canvas. My recent work has been exhibited at the ANNTA Gallery in Madrid, Spain in 2004. My work is displayed in the permanent collection of the Museo de la Danza (Museum of the Dance) in Havana, as well as in private collections in the United States, Canada and Spain.
